A subtropical escape in an Appenine valley

The Location

A warm, humid valley in an Appenine valley in the Lazio region of central Italy with gurgling stream and restrictive planning for a small vaction property on the site.

The Design

Taking advantage of the unique microclimate of the site, I used native plants, hardy tree ferns and semi-hardy subtropical species to create a dense, layered planting on a narrow site, combining woodland trails, slow moving streams and pools to create a magical journey around the property that appears to have always existed on the site.
